Many publications make use of opportunistic data, such as citizen science observation data, to infer large‐scale properties of species’ distributions. However, the few publications that use opportunistic citizen science data to study animal ecology at a habitat level do so without accounting for spatial biases in opportunistic records or using methods that are difficult to generalize. In this study, we explore the biases that exist in opportunistic observations and suggest an approach to correct for them. We first examined the extent of the biases in opportunistic citizen science observations of three wild ungulate species in Norway by comparing them to data from GPS telemetry. We then quantified the extent of the biases by specifying a model of the biases. From the bias model, we sampled available locations within the species’ home range. Along with opportunistic observations, we used the corrected availability locations to estimate a resource selection function (RSF). We tested this method with simulations and empirical datasets for the three species. We compared the results of our correction method to RSFs obtained using opportunistic observations without correction and to RSFs using GPS‐telemetry data. Finally, we compared habitat suitability maps obtained using each of these models. Opportunistic observations are more affected by human access and visibility than locations derived from GPS telemetry. This has consequences for drawing inferences about species’ ecology. Models naïvely using opportunistic observations in habitat‐use studies can result in spurious inferences. However, sampling availability locations based on the spatial biases in opportunistic data improves the estimation of the species’ RSFs and predicted habitat suitability maps in some cases. This study highlights the challenges and opportunities of using opportunistic observations in habitat‐use studies. While our method is not foolproof it is a first step toward unlocking the potential of opportunistic citizen science data for habitat‐use studies.  相似文献

When we employ cluster sampling to collect data with matched pairs, the assumption of independence between all matched pairs is not likely true. This paper notes that applying interval estimators, that do not account for the intraclass correlation between matched pairs, to estimate the simple difference between two proportions of response can be quite misleading, especially when both the number of matched pairs per cluster and the intraclass correlation between matched pairs within clusters are large. This paper develops two asymptotic interval estimators of the simple difference, that accommodate the data of cluster sampling with correlated matched pairs. This paper further applies Monte Carlo simulation to compare the finite sample performance of these estimators and demonstrates that the interval estimator, derived from a quadratic equation proposed here, can actually perform quite well in a variety of situations.  相似文献

Bhoj (1997c) proposed a new ranked set sampling (NRSS) procedure for a specific two‐parameter family of distributions when the sample size is even. This NRSS procedure can be applied to one‐parameter family of distributions when the sample size is even. However, this procedure cannot be used if the sample size is odd. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a modified version of the NRSS procedure which can be used for one‐parameter distributions when the sample size is odd. Simple estimator for the parameter based on proposed NRSS is derived. The relative precisions of this estimator are higher than those of other estimators which are based on other ranked set sampling procedures and the best linear unbiased estimator using all order statistics.  相似文献

Population composition is often estimated by double sampling in which the value of a covariate is noted on each of a large number of randomly selected units and the value of the covariate and the exact class to which the unit belongs is noted for a smaller sample. The cross‐classified sample can be used to estimate the classification rates and these, in turn, can be used in conjunction with the estimated distribution of the covariate to obtain an improved estimate of the population composition over that obtained by direct observation of the identity of the individuals in a small sample. There are two approaches to this problem characterized by the way in which the classification rates are defined. The simplest approach uses estimates of the probability P(i | j) that the unit is actually in class i given that the covariate is in class j. The more complicated approach uses estimates of the probability Pi | j) that the covariate falls in class j given that the unit is actually in class i. The latter approach involves estimating more parameters than the former but avoids the necessity for the two samples to be drawn from the same population. We show the two approaches can be combined when there are multiple surveys. For example, one might conduct a disease survey for several years; in each year the accurate and/or error‐prone techniques may be applied to samples. The sensitivities and specificities of the error‐prone test are assumed constant across surveys. Generalizations allow for more than one error‐prone classifier and partial verification (estimation of misclassification rates by application of the accurate technique to fixed subsamples from each error‐prone category). The general approach is illustrated by considering a repeated survey for malaria.  相似文献

This technical note examines the potential for preparing template DNA in polymerase chain reactions (PCR) from urine in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata). Microsatellite band patterns from urine samples showed close agreement with those of blood and fecal samples, and only a few hundred μl of urine yielded a template DNA for PCR. This research will increase the opportunity for scientists to examine the genetic backgrounds of their target animals by using non‐invasive sample collection in the wild. Am. J. Several systematic sampling methods have been used to estimate the population mean when size of the population is a multiple of sample size. Among these, only few methods have been extended and used to estimate mean of the population when its size is not a multiple of sample size. In this paper, new methods called balanced circular systematic sampling and centered circular systematic sampling are introduced by extending balanced systematic sampling method and centered systematic sampling method respectively. These methods are compared with circular systematic sampling using average variance of corrected sample means for populations exhibiting approximate linear and parabolic trends. The suggested methods are found suitable to estimate the population mean.  相似文献

Spatially explicit capture–recapture (SECR) models are gaining popularity for estimating densities of mammalian carnivores. They use spatially explicit encounter histories of individual animals to estimate a detection probability function described by two parameters: magnitude (g 0), and spatial scale (σ). Carnivores exhibit heterogeneous detection probabilities and home range sizes, and exist at low densities, so g 0 and σ likely vary, but field surveys often yield inadequate data to detect and model the variation. We sampled American black bears (Ursus americanus) on 43 study areas in ON, Canada, 2006–2009. We detected 713 animals 1810 times; however, study area-specific samples were sometimes small (6–34 individuals detected 13–93 times). We compared AIC c values from SECR models fit to the complete data set to evaluate support for various forms of variation in g 0 and σ, and to identify a parsimonious model for aggregating data among study areas to estimate detection parameters more precisely. Models that aggregated data within broad habitat classes and years were supported over those with study area-specific g 0 and σ (ΔAIC c  ≥ 30), and precision was enhanced. Several other forms of variation in g 0 and σ, including individual heterogeneity, were also supported and affected density estimates. If study design cannot eliminate detection heterogeneity, it should ensure that samples are sufficient to detect and model it. Where this is not feasible, combing sparse data across multiple surveys could allow for improved inference.  相似文献

This article develops hypothesis testing procedures for the stratified mark‐specific proportional hazards model with missing covariates where the baseline functions may vary with strata. The mark‐specific proportional hazards model has been studied to evaluate mark‐specific relative risks where the mark is the genetic distance of an infecting HIV sequence to an HIV sequence represented inside the vaccine. This research is motivated by analyzing the RV144 phase 3 HIV vaccine efficacy trial, to understand associations of immune response biomarkers on the mark‐specific hazard of HIV infection, where the biomarkers are sampled via a two‐phase sampling nested case‐control design. We test whether the mark‐specific relative risks are unity and how they change with the mark. The developed procedures enable assessment of whether risk of HIV infection with HIV variants close or far from the vaccine sequence are modified by immune responses induced by the HIV vaccine; this question is interesting because vaccine protection occurs through immune responses directed at specific HIV sequences. The test statistics are constructed based on augmented inverse probability weighted complete‐case estimators. The asymptotic properties and finite‐sample performances of the testing procedures are investigated, demonstrating double‐robustness and effectiveness of the predictive auxiliaries to recover efficiency. The finite‐sample performance of the proposed tests are examined through a comprehensive simulation study. The methods are applied to the RV144 trial.  相似文献

Alzheimer's disease is one of the most common dementia among elderly worldwide. There is no therapeutic drugs until now to treat effectively this disease. One main reason is due to the poorly understood mechanism of Aβ peptide aggregation, which plays a crucial role in the development of Alzheimer's disease. It remains challenging to experimentally or theoretically characterize the secondary and tertiary structures of the Aβ monomer because of its high flexibility and aggregation propensity, and its conformations that lead to the aggregation are not fully identified. In this review, we highlight various structural ensembles of Aβ peptide revealed and characterized by computational approaches in order to find converging structures of Aβ monomer. Understanding how Aβ peptide forms transiently stable structures prior to aggregation will contribute to the design of new therapeutic molecules against the Alzheimer's disease.  相似文献
